This is a workshop in travel photography and camera use, using the blossoms at FDR Memorial, MLK Jr. Memorial and Jefferson Memorial and the Tidal Basin as our backdrop. A professional architectural photographer accompanies the group, giving an initial orientation on photography and then working with clients individually to improve their picture-taking skills as they make their way counter-clockwise around the Tidal Basin to capture the cherry blossoms with the late afternoon sun behind them. Now in their seventh year of operation, these popular photo safaris fill up quickly, so we recommend early registration at www.WashingtonPhotoSafari.com.
What We Offer: Photography training, using the beautiful cherry tree vistas as our models to teach you techniques of travel and informal portrait photography . We also cover camera use information, such as f stops and shutter speeds, white balance and ISO settings, so that you can take full advantage of all the features on your camera.. A professional photographer begins each safari with an orientation and then provides hands-on instruction as you shoot. Any camera is fine, and all skill levels are invited to attend. Advanced photographers will appreciate our knowledge of best shooting locations.
When We Meet: Afternoon cherry blossoms safaris meet at FDR Memorial Bookstore near intersection of Ohio drive and West Basin Drive SW at 3 pm to catch late afternoon sun. Best reached by Metro to Smithsonian stop, Independence Ave. exit, and by bicycle via nearby Capital Bikeshare locations Allow 15-20 minutes walk to starting points. Do not drive, parking and driving is impossible at this busy time of year.
Why You Should Come: Each year the trees donated by Japan over 100 years ago provide a gorgeous vista of pink and white ringing the Tidal Basin, making cherry blossoms the signature event of DC’s tourist season.. Visitors to the nation’s capital should not miss this extraordinary event, and local residents needing an excuse to see the blossoms now have one: photography instruction! You will learn how to make best use of your camera in shooting people, architecture, landscapes and monuments, and you will come away with gorgeous images in your camera.
Washington Photo Safari has trained over 27,000 amateur photographers since 1999, and this marks the 7th year of cherry blossoms photo safaris. Most of the safaris are taught by Washington Photo Safari director E. David Luria, an architectural photographer trained in Paris, who knows where all the best trees are located!
