Asian Art and Culture Day at the Workhouse

The Workhouse Arts Center is proud to present Asian Art and Culture Day at the Workhouse, National Cherry Blossom Festival 2013, on Saturday, April 6. From 11am to 4:00pm there will be workshops, demonstrations, performances, talks and exhibitions featuring Asian art, culture, music and food. The day will feature origami workshops and film, traditional costume display, horticulture, brush painting demonstrations, cherry tree planting, and other cultural activities for all ages. Here are just a few highlights of the Festival:
- The Workhouse will feature an art exhibition on the ephemeral nature of the cherry blossom. Curated by Laurel Lukaszewki and Komelia Hongja Okim, the exhibition will explore fleeting moments captured in art and celebrate the cherry blossom and Asian and American relations. The exhibition will be open to the public March 2 – April 7, with an exhibition reception on March 9th, from 6 – 9pm.
- Guest Lecturer Dr. Svitlana Shiells will discuss Japanese influences on the work of artist Gustav Klimt as well as the Japanese aesthetic in contemporary art.
- The Japan-America Society of DC will host games, information and kimono dress-up opportunities for children.
- The Workhouse ceramic artists will host an Ikebana exhibition featuring vessels created by the six ceramic studio artists. The exhibition will be on view from April 1 – April 7. The ceramics studio will also host an Ikebana demonstration on Saturday, April 6 during the Asian Art and Culture Festival at the Workhouse.
- Visitors will be invited to join Workhouse artist Darlene Kaplan who will host a Japanese tea tasting workshop, and she will present a demonstration of Japanese brush painting.
- Students from George Mason University’s Japanese studies program will present The Magic Fan (mahoo no oogi). This Japanese play will be performed and directed by the students.
Getting There
The Workhouse is located on Rt.123 (Ox Road) near the intersection with I-95. There is plenty of free parking on campus.
