Extended Hours and Upcoming Events at the National Gallery of Art

Due to popular demand, the National Gallery of Art has extended hours during the final weekend to see the landmark exhibition Colorful Realm: Japanese Bird-and-Flower Paintings by Itō Jakuchū. The renowned  exhibit will remain open until 8:00pm on April 27, 28, and 29.

Additional special events through April 29 showcase the National Gallery of Art’s offerings during the Centennial Celebration:

  • Sunday, April 29, 2:00pm – Lecture by Yukio Lippit, professor of Japanese art, Harvard University: Itō Jakuchū’s Colorful Realm: Juxtaposition, Naturalism, and Ritual (Location: National Gallery of Art, East Building Auditorium)
    Book signing of Colorful Realm: Japanese Bird-and-Flower Paintings by Itō Jakuchū follows.
  • Sunday, April 29, 6:30pm Concert: Kioi Sinfonietta Tokyo with Yu Kosuge, pianist; Thierry Fischer, conductor (Location: West Building, West Garden Court)
    Music by Mozart and Beethoven. This concert is made possible in part by Nippon Steel Corporation.
  • Films including Early Summer (April 28 at 2:30pm in the East Building Concourse, Auditorium);  Tokyo Twilight (April 29 at 4:30pm in the East Building Concourse, Auditorium); and  The Thousand Year Fire (April 29 at 11:30am in the East Building Concourse, Auditorium, ages 9 and up)
  • Family Activities, April 29 at 2:00pm (Location: Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Sublevel 2) Create your own printing block using Styrofoam. Then print landscapes that convey the soft light of early dawn, just as Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai did in his series 36 Views of Mount Fuji. Ages 8-14.
