Kwanzan Species Wins America's Favorite Cherry Tree

In honor of the 100-year anniversary of the gift of trees, the Festival and Arbor Day Foundation launched “America’s Favorite Cherry Tree” in January 2012.  Since then, about 6,500 votes came from all 50 states and more than 25 countries. Participants have determined the bright pink Kwanzan the favorite.  The three cherry tree finalists were Yoshino, Kwanzan, or Autumn Flowering. All three species are found at the Tidal Basin and were part of the gift of trees from Tokyo to Washington, DC in 1912. Cherry trees are beautiful and excellent for the environment.
